What are common reasons that engines don't start?
It's important to take action as soon as you notice that your vehicle is struggling to fire up. If you delay addressing the problem, it could soon worsen and become bad enough that your car won't start at all. Here are seven common causes of no-start.
Clogged Fuel Filter
If your fuel filter is all clogged up, your engine may not be able to receive the fuel it needs to come roaring to life. You can avoid this issue by replacing your fuel filter every 20,000 to 30,000 miles.
Bad Starter
A classic indication of starter trouble is that you turn the key and the engine won't start, but you do hear a clicking noise. Also, if your dash lights will turn on but your engine won't, then a starter problem could be present.
Faulty Fuel Pump
With a failing fuel pump, gas may not be able to travel from the tank to the engine. Symptoms of fuel pump trouble include worsening acceleration, decreasing gas mileage, and sputtering at high speeds.
Issues with Battery/Charging System
When you put a new battery in your car, it should work reliably for a minimum of three years. If it dies sooner for no clear reason (such as leaving your headlights on), then an alternator issue could be to blame.
Dirty Fuel Injectors
Dirty fuel injectors may prevent sufficient fuel from reaching the combustion chamber. A fuel additive can help with this issue. You'll just want to make sure that you don't overuse the additive.
Problem with Distributor Cap
Moisture that gets under the distributor cap can prevent spark plugs from receiving enough voltage.
Failing Ignition Switch
With an ignition switch problem, the starter solenoid might not get the power it needs. One sign of ignition switch trouble is that your dash lights are flickering.
