The Check Engine Light

Although an illuminated check engine light doesn't necessarily mean that your engine is on the cusp of failure, you'll still want to visit the shop for computerized diagnostics so the underlying issue can be pinpointed and addressed before it escalates. Check engine lights often get triggered by issues with catalytic converters, MAF sensors, O2 sensors, and ignition coils.

Common Indications of Engine Trouble

Strange sounds that come from the engine should be investigated. A variety of issues can cause knocking or tapping noises, ranging from faulty rod bearings to inadequate lubrication due to extremely low oil.

Discolored/excessive exhaust smoke is another sign of trouble. You'll want to keep an eye on the smoke's color for clues about the problem. With blue-tinged smoke, you could be dealing with an oil leak. Black smoke is a sign that too much fuel is burning up. If you see a lot of white smoke coming out of the tailpipe, then you've got evidence of an internal coolant leak---and may have a blown head gasket.

Power loss can also be a sign of significant trouble. When an old car gradually loses a little power over time, you don't necessarily need to worry. But a quick loss of a lot of power could indicate worn-out pistons or another serious issue.
