Common Symptoms of Alternator Trouble

A dead battery is one of the more familiar signs of alternator failure. However, if your battery is dead, you don't want to automatically blame your alternator. An assortment of other issues can cause a battery to die, such as parasitic draws, old age, loose/corroded connections, and forgetting to turn off headlights. But if there isn't another obvious culprit for your dead battery, then you'll want to investigate your alternator.

A faulty alternator can also cause electrical accessories to malfunction. Modern automobiles regularly have computers that will reduce power to certain electrical accessories when alternator trouble is detected. This preserves power for the car's most critical electrical functions, but may cause issues like power seats taking longer to adjust or power windows going up/down more slowly. An alternator problem can also cause headlights to start dimming/flickering, which could pose a safety hazard.

Another potential sign of alternator failure is that a dashboard warning light has flashed on with the letters ALT or GEN. In some vehicles, this warning light is instead in the form of a battery-shaped icon. Whenever a warning light turns on, it's important to promptly figure out what is triggering it. Otherwise, the issue could soon worsen and become more expensive to address.
